Brigade - Every little helps when it comes to safety.
The company
Tesco.com is the largest online grocery store in the world, providing customers with the choice to have their shopping delivered to their homes at a time convenient to them.
The situation
There is a huge ‘blind spot’ to the rear of the Tesco’s home delivery vehicles which can cause a problem when drivers are reversing or parking particularly in the limited space available in our suburban streets.
The solution
ARK of Haslingden, a long standing Brigade stockist, supplied two BACKSCAN systems which were fitted to Tesco’s fleet of home delivery vehicles. Solomon Commercials Ltd, body builders also of Haslingden, fitted upper BACKSCAN sensors to protect the Mercedes Sprinters from overhanging branches, particularly in rural areas. Lower BACKSCAN sensors were also fitted to the bottom of the delivery vans to detect people and objects in the blind spot when reversing.
BACKSCAN minimises damage and gives greater protection to people and objects behind the vehicle, whether moving or stationary and can create favourable effects on insurance premiums.
Products fitted
BACKSCAN BS400 KBP – a flush mounted 4 sensor system, suitable for metal or plastic bumpers and bodywork.
BACKSCAN uses ultrasonic technology to inform the driver of the distance between the vehicle and any
obstacle in the path. As soon as reverse gear is engaged BACKSCAN starts scanning to the rear of the sensors and a three stage audible warning is given to the driver.
DSM (Dynamic Scanning Memory) is included in all BACKSCAN systems. This unique and patented feature prevents ‘false alarms’ from tow-hooks, rear mounted tyres and other ancillary equipment that intrude into the first 40cm of each sensor’s detection zone.
BACKSCAN is ideal for multiple drop collection and delivery vehicles and for drivers who need to park or reverse in tight situations. There are BACKSCAN systems designed for all types of vehicle from small cars up to large vans or trucks. Optional visual displays are also available in the BACKSCAN range.
Feedback
Fleet Engineer at Tesco, Duncan Vavangas said: “We are very pleased with the performance of Brigade’s Backscan which enables home delivery drivers to reverse into tight spaces . This ensures the safety of pedestrians and property, thus reducing damage to the vehicle .”
