Brigade and Handistep improve BT safety

Brigade and Handistep - working together to improve BT safety

The company

Handistep manufacture a unique rear step system designed for light commercial vehicles, enabling the driver to enter and exit the rear of the vehicle safely and aide safe access to the roof-rack. The Handistep was first introduced in 2001 and sales have continued to grow, with the step now also being fitted to refrigeration trailers and box bodied vehicles. Handistep is now fitted by BT’s fleet of new Ford Transit vans as standard specification, and also specified by the NHS, police, ambulance, councils and government services.

The problem

With BT’s new fleet of Ford Transit vans, there is a blind spot to the rear of the vehicle which can make reversing and parking difficult. This problem could be easily overcome by fitting reversing sensors to the rear of the van but the Handistep would protrude into the detection zone resulting in false signals readings.

The solution

Brigade provided a bespoke solution by fitting a 4 sensor Backscan system to the step and programming the detection zones specifically for the unique Handistep design.
Backscan warns the driver of the decreasing distance between the vehicle and any person or obstacle at the rear. Brigade’s reversing sensors can minimise or eliminate reversing damage and provide protection for people and objects whether moving or stationary.
As soon as reverse gear is engaged, Brigade’s system scans the area behind the vehicle and a three stage audible warning is given to the driver if there is anything in the detection zone. All Brigade Backscan models feature DSM (Dynamic Scanning Memory) that prevents false alarms from tow hooks, rear mounted tyres and other ancillary equipment that intrudes into the sensors detection zone.
The pre wired IP68 rated connectors offer a quality product unlike any other sensors on the market. The sensors are vibration proof and have been RoHS and EMC tested and approved. Flush mounted and slim line, they are easily fitted to the steps. All Handistep frames feature the necessary holes and spacing in the metal work, enabling quick and easy retrofitting of the sensors if required.
Optional additions to the reversing kit specification include a dash mounted LED plus a digital display enabling the driver to see the distance from the object or person in relation to the back of the vehicle on the display.

Products fitted

This particular Backscan is specifically programmed and unique to Handistep. The four sensor system was derived from the BS-410 with an additional visual display. Backscan gives a clear warning to the driver and gives greater protection to people and objects and can create favourable effects on insurance premiums.
